Above or below the line

04.04.2011 /   Andrejic, Vladica (2170)

Since the Individual European Championship ended, the main issue in Serbia was whether Ivanisevic qualify for the World Cup 2011. While the public says otherwise, I will give you my answer.

A few days ago Individual European Championship finished in Aix Les Bains (22.3-2.4.2011). The most successful Serbian player was Ivan Ivanisevic who finished on 27th place without defeat. Since this championship gives 23 invitations for the World Cup 2011, and some of players already have a spot, the issue in Serbia is whether Ivanisevic qualified or he is the first below the line.

After the completion of the tournament the first words gave a site ChessVibes in its paper, with explaination that Potkin, Svidler and Mamedov had already qualified and therefore new qualifiers are players to 26th place (Mcshane, Fridman and Motylev). Ivanisevic is the next, on the 27th place! My analysis explain that Ivanisevic qualifies too, because the Jakovenko already qualified. There is no official information, and everithing is copy of ChessVibes. Finally, the official website of the European Championship had written something today, but it is Chessvibes copy too.

According to the World Cup 2011 regulations the first spots gets World Champion, then four semi-finalists of the previous World Cup, Women's World Champion, and the last two World Junior Champions. After that there are 20 players by ratings, (average for lists of 1st July 2010 and 1st January 2011) without inactive players. If someone qualified otherwise, before 1.1.2011 list is published, then he disappears from the ratings qualifiers. Here is a table that will give 20 participants per rating.

In any case, according to my calculations, list of qualified players by rating is the following: Carlsen, Aronian, Topalov, Kramnik, Mamedyarov, Grischuk, Ivanchuk, Radjabov, Nakamura, Eljanov, Shirov, Svidler, Gashimov, Wang Hao, Leko, Wang Yue, Jakovenko, Kamsky, Bacrot, and Navara. This means that Jakovenko already qualified and opens up a place for Ivanisevic.
